IPFW Graduate Research Assistantships Available

The application deadline is 20 April, and students must be nominated by a faculty member.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please read the announcement carefully and note that letters of support must accompany the application.  Make sure you allow sufficient time to gather these materials – it is courteous to request letters at least two weeks in advance of a deadline.

 Campaign Corps, a project of EMILY’s List, is a national grassroots
 program dedicated to politically empowering young people. Each year
 we train talented recent college graduates (both from undergraduate
 and graduate) and place them on targeted, progressive Democratic
 campaigns. Formerly known as Participation 2000, Campaign Corps has
 been bringing young people into the political process since 1988.
 We’ve placed hundreds of staffers on some of the most important
 political campaigns in the country—providing young people with the
 first step in a career dedicated to progressive politics.
 
 We are recruiting for the Campaign Corps Class of 2007. Applications
 are available online at www.campaigncorps.org and are due April 20,
 2007. Once selected, a diverse group of staffers will come to
 Washington for a week- long Campaign School, where they will learn the
 basics of political campaigning –  voter targeting, field organizing,
 fundraising, and press strategy –  from the country’s leading
 Democratic operatives. Staffers are paid to work side by side with
 candidates and other political professionals for the last three
 months of the campaign. After Election Day, Campaign Corps brings
 staffers back to DC for a post- election retreat and debriefing.
 Campaign Corps will help you launch your career in progressive
 politics!
    
 All staffers receive a stipend of $1000 a month, free housing during
 the campaign, health care, and all travel expenses paid. (Previous

STUDENT RESEARCH REPORT COMPETITION

Saturday – April 14, 2007
    
The competition is open to ALL students, graduate and undergraduate, who have done independent, scientific research in one of the following areas:

     Anthropology
     Audiology and Speech Sciences
     Biological Sciences
     Biochemistry
     Chemistry
     Communications
     Computer Science
     Dental Technology
     Engineering and Engineering Technology
     Geology
     Mathematics and Statistics
     Medical Sciences, Health Sciences and Nursing
     Physics
     Psychology
     Sociology

How to Enter:

Send an Abstract (electronic copy) in Microsoft word describing the research with the title, author(s), faculty sponsor, department name, and university name to Dr. Mark Jordan, Department of Biology (SB 384), jordanma@ipfw.edu , (phone 16459) AND to Dr. Carl N. The presentations will be in conjunction with the 2007 Undergraduate Research & Creative Endeavor Symposium. Judging:  A 15 minute oral presentation of your work will be evaluated by a panel of professional scientists.

    The format of the competition will include a 15 minute oral presentation of scientific research compiled by the student, a 5 minute question and answer period, and subsequent judging by a scientific panel chosen by the Sigma XI society.  The criterion for judging will be:

1.    Field and experimental reports are equally valid.  Data (not anticipated results) should be presented.  All reports should be directed toward answering some question or testing some hypothesis.  Surveys of the literature may be presented but are not adequate for the award unless supported by investigative work.

2.    Presentations will be scored on the basis of 100 points as follows:

Substantive content, 35 points:  Are there data?  Is the methodology adequate?  Is there a conclusion?  Is it warranted by the data?  If descriptive, is the report sufficiently detailed?

Organization, 25 points:  Is the report placed in context?  Are the methods clear?  Are the data understandable?  Are the tables, graphs, etc., used if needed?  Is the conclusion or summary clearly given?

Presentation, 20 points:  Can the speaker be heard and understood?  Does she/he understand the material?  Are visual aids adequate in size and clarity?  Does the speaker show an understanding of the relation of his/her topic to a larger area?  Are questions answered adequately?

Judges Discretion, 10 points:  These points may be used for any factors not considered above.  Any number may be awarded to recognize unusual quality or for any other factor which seems appropriate to the judge.  For example, these points may be used to give preference to the work of individuals in distinction to group effort.

Originality, 10 points:  Does the work show ingenuity on the part of the student or is it the continuation of research initiated by a graduate leader?  Are all materials provided through a large laboratory or must the student collect them him/herself from sources he discovers?

Media Services Technician
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent GED. College degree or college degree work in communication, electronic media, mass communication or related degree. Working knowledge of a variety of video production equipment, e.g., cameras, teleprompter, studio and location lighting instruments, sound equipment (microphones).
Working knowledge of non-linear editing systems, ideally Avid systems; use of graphics software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe products ( Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, etc.) and the like is preferred. ; Some knowledge of website development. Knowledge of computer-based media platforms, i.e. Flash, Window’s Media Player, Quicktime, etc. Knowledge, operation and troubleshooting ability with a wide variety of audio-visual equipment including, but not limited to LCD projectors, VHS/DVD players, PA systems, etc. Working knowledge of duplication systems for VHS tape, DVD and CD dubs. Self-sufficient at clerical skills. Basic understanding of video conferencing. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

The position is full time – days with a salary range from $12.88 – $19.32

Academic Advisor Position Available

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) is accepting applications for the position of Academic Advisor in the Office of Academic Counseling and Career Services (ACCS).  ACCS is a multi-function unit within Student Affairs and includes Academic Counseling, Career Services, and Testing Services.  Advisors in ACCS provide academic advising support for undeclared students and other special populations. Additional responsibilities include teaching Freshman Success classes, participation in summer orientation programs, and the creation and implementation of innovative programs to enhance student success and retention.

A Master’s degree is required, along with strong communication skills and an interest in helping undergraduate students.  The successful candidate will work both autonomously and as part of a team in a multi-service environment.  Preference will be given to candidates with prior advising experience and/or career development programming in a university setting.

Grant for Research on Media Reform

The Social Science Research Council is pleased to announce its small grants project for academic-advocacy collaboration in the media and communications field. This project will provide grants of up to $7,500 for research that supports efforts to change the media / telecommunications infrastructure, practices, policies or content. The grants are intended for short-term work, completable and usable by advocacy partners within the next 4-12 months. Proposals for this round must be submitted by April 4, 2007 by 5PM EST in order to be eligible for funding. Grant recipients will be announced on April 20, 2007.
