All Expenses Paid Trip in April to San Francisco Available for Grad Student

Filed under: Uncategorized — Steven Carr @ 11:12 pm

This opportunity has potential: a line on a vita, possible basis for synthesis paper, and a free, all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco. Make sure you get all of the information regarding what is involved before you commit to this project. I have some information, but you also should contact Dr. Todorovic as well.

The Richard T. Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences Department of Management and Marketing would like to invite one of your graduate students to join us in the USF Business Plan competitions. The student will help our team with necessary presentation activities, communicating new venture potential to the Silicon Valley venture capitalists. These activities include, but not limited to, a 90 second elevator pitch and a 15 minute presentation.

Our group will introduce a computer program that is able to take normal human speech, and translate it into sign language utilizing the proprietary 26 degrees of freedom technology. In essence, this technology incorporates the facial expressions and grimaces into the sign language presentation.

The selected grad student will travel to San Francisco on April 23 and stay there until April 27 . All expenses will be paid by our school.

Further, because the intellectual property being developed involves a software for the hearing impaired, this activity may also be useful as a basis for the synthesis paper.

We would ask that interested students contact Dr. Carr and Dr. Bill Todorovic (260-481-6940 or todorovz@ipfw.edu ) as soon as possible.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Steven Carr @ 4:43 pm

From Marcia Dixson:

Comm colleagues:

As you know Dacia Charlesworth, the spouse of the Vice-Chancellor candidate, Bill McKinney, will be visiting campus on Friday, March 21st. You should have received her vitae by previous email.

Anyway, our agenda with her is:

Teaching demonstration noon – 1:00 NF 141
Chance to talk with faculty and students 1:00 – 1:30 NF 141

Since there is no class on Friday at noon – please encourage your students to attend. I’d especially like to see a number of graduate students there so she has the opportunity to meet some graduate students. Steve – could you email graduate students?

I realize the next few weeks will be busy, I appreciate your efforts and your time in these important decisions.

EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DIVERSITY

Filed under: Uncategorized — Steven Carr @ 4:29 pm

EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DIVERSITY IN ORGANISATIONS, COMMUNITIES AND NATIONS
HEC Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 17-20 June 2008
http://www.Diversity-Conference.com

The Diversity Conference has a history of bringing together scholarly, government and practice-based participants with an interest in the issues of diversity and community. The Conference examines the concept of diversity as a positive aspect of a global world and globalised society. Diversity is in many ways reflective of our present world order, but there are ways of taking this further without necessary engendering its alternatives: racism, conflict, discrimination and inequity. Diversity as a mode of social existence can be projected in ways that deepen the range of human experience. The Conference will seek to explore the full range of what diversity means and explore modes of diversity in real-life situations of living together in community. The Conference supports a move away from simple affirmations that ‘diversity is good’ to a much more nuanced account of the effects and uses of diversity on differently situated communities in the context of our current epoch of globalisation.

Main speakers include Susan Bridges, University of Hong Kong; Jock Collins, University Technology, Sydney, Australia; and Brendan O’Leary, Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the University of Pennsylvania Program in Ethnic Conflict. The Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed International Journal of Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in this fully refereed academic Journal, as well as access to the electronic version of the Conference proceedings.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 31 March 2008. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. Full details of the Conference, including an online proposal submission form, are to be found at the Conference website – http://www.Diversity-Conference.com

We look forward to receiving your proposal and hope you will be able to join us in Montreal in June 2008.

Yours Sincerely,

CFP due 3/13: Conference on the Inclusive Museum

Filed under: Uncategorized — Steven Carr @ 4:44 pm

Please note the free registration being offered for grad students below. European conferences tend to be very generous in terms of support once you get there. Additional funding opportunities through IPFW, Purdue, and IU are available for overseas travel.

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Conference Organising Committee, we would like to inform you of the:

CONFERENCE ON THE INCLUSIVE MUSEUM
National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, the Netherlands, 8-11 June 2008
http://www.Museum-Conference.com

At this time of fundamental social change, this Conference will address the question of the role of the museum, both as a creature of that change, and also as an agent of change. The International Conference on the Inclusive Museum is a place where museum practioners, researchers, thinkers and teachers can engage in discussion on the historic character and future shape of the museum. The key question of the Conference is ‘How can the institution of the museum become more inclusive?’

Main speakers include Tomur Atagok, artist; Allisandra Cummins, Director of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society; Steven Engelsman, Director of the National Museum of Ethnology in the Netherlands; Amareswar Galla, Professor of Museum Studies, School of English, Media Studies and Art History, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia; Denise Hamú Marcos de La Penha, World Wildlife Federation (WWF) Brazil Chief Executive Officer; and Lejo Schenk, Director of the Amsterdam Tropenmuseum (Royal Tropical Institute). The Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed International Journal of the Inclusive Museum. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in this fully refereed academic Journal, as well as access to the electronic version of the Conference proceedings.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 13 March 2008. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. Full details of the Conference, including an online proposal submission form, are to be found at the Conference website – http://www.Museum-Conference.com

We are also making available a limited number of free registrations for graduate students who are willing to assist at the conference, and people from developing countries. For details, see the conference website.

We look forward to receiving your proposal and hope you will be able to join us in Leiden in June 2008.

Yours Sincerely,

Strategic Planning for Access Fort Wayne

Filed under: Uncategorized — Steven Carr @ 9:19 pm

Access Fort Wayne (a department of the Allen County Public Library) is asking the Department of Communication at IPFW for a graduate student who would be interested in leading the Access Fort Wayne department staff through the elemental stages of strategic planning. The student would lead department staff through the initial process of mission statement development, vision statement, goals and objectives along with suggesting strategic planning materials for the AFW staff to study. AFW staff would develop and implement all survey tools for information gathering of current users of the facility and community partners. AFW staff would then submit their reports to said graduate student for collation into an action report.

Access Fort Wayne is the public and government access TV facility for Allen County. AFW operates 3 cable channels, 2 studios and several editing systems for community and government representatives to produce local programming and exorcise no editorial control over the content of programs. Access Fort Wayne have not done any strategic planning since 1995 when AFW expanded their services exponentially and find ourselves in need of new direction and connectivity with community non-profit organizations.

Access Fort Wayne has three particular key issues that AFW wants to address in the next three (3) to five (5) years. Those issues are staffing levels, funding and community outreach. As you can see, Access Fort Wayne has much of the same concerns as any non-profit organization locally and nationally.

The timeline for the project would begin sometime late August and would terminate at the end of November. If further information is required, please contact me with the request.

Sincerely,

Erik Möllberg
