I argue that reforms are needed because execs have too much power over corp governance. Ironically, the reforms would bring corps closer to the public interest. Anyway, I've just posted on it. If you are interested, you might check out the following: http://skipworden.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/corporate-partisanship-eclipsing-the-public-interest/

Just a little nit-picky type thing but the year given at the end of the first paragraph is 2008 - not 2009. Yes, I know it's minor, but...

I am not an organizer of this conference, and I am just passing along this information to our Communication graduate students here at IPFW in Fort Wayne IN. However, I think there is a long critical tradition that looks at the myriad dimensions of consumer culture as creating an illusion of happiness. Perhaps one of the more famous instances of this critique is the work of Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer.

This sounds like a fascinating conference. Your phrase "manufacturing happiness" brought me up short. It has always seemed to me that the above disciplines were about finding the inner state of happiness, but upon reflection, I see that many do indeed intend to impose a state upon the "natural" self. I'd enjoy hearing more about the papers presented in the conference and would like to know of writers in this area of inquiry.

STARs is an excellent program and continues to evolve. It is geared to the more non-traditional student, i.e. anyone who is not fresh out of High School. For any student who has not attended an orientation program at IPFW, it would be worth the few hours of your time to attend the August STARs progrm. It will be held on the Thursday before classes begin from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Walb Union. The first hour (5-6) is meet and greet time, campus tours, College, Division and Service booths, and free food (Catablu this Spring!). The second hour is Vice-Chancellor McClellend, Robin Newman (Associate Dean of Students) and the student body president; a student panel; a faculty panel with Greg Anderson, Mary Arnold Schwartz, and John LaMasters - what a treat they are! The last hour and a half is breakout sessions, one of which is conducted by yours truly (it is designed for the Transfer student). Hope to see you in August!
