ng myself ready for the NCA convention coming up very quickly! I remember well my first few NCA conventions as a graduate student. There was so much to choose from–I was anxious see the scholars whose work I had been studying and also a bit overwhelmed
t all the choices and demands for my time. In addition, I was hoping I would find people to talk with among so many convention-goers. Soon I was also ready to present my own work, concerned about doing well, making a good impression, and getting feedback
on my ideas.

With over 1,200 sessions in Chicago, the hardest thing is to figure out what to see first. I suggest preparing your schedule in advance; search the convention program and download a personalized schedule at: http://www.natcom.org/index.asp?bid=11032 or download the program as PDF files.

If you have not yet registered you may do so at the convention. You’ll find registration on the Lower Level of the
Hilton Chicago, and it they will be open to help you and answer any questions. This is also where you’ll pick up your convention program if you are registered (Wednesday, November 11 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Thursday, November 12 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Fri

IPFW Diversity Council is seeking a half-time graduate assistant to work with the Steering Committee on various administrative and research projects for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Half-time (20 hours/week) for the 2009-2010 academic year

Compensation

• $8,330 academic year salary (prorated to when the candidate starts this year)
• Tuition reduction:  graduate assistants pay $640 per semester plus $27.95 per credit hour

Duties

• Manage Diversity Council webpage
• Assist with development and execution of research projects, including surveys and focus groups
• Perform web and library research
• Administrative support of Diversity Council committees

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in an IPFW graduate program
• Academic coursework and/or experience in research design and execution
• Ability to conduct focus groups and web-based surveys preferred
• Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently
• Ability to maintain high ethical standards in the conduct of research and analyses

IPFW’s first communication honor society, the Psi Omega Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, will be hosting a film presentation and discussion on Friday, October 30, 2009, featuring Mary Daniel’s “Pictures of Things That Aren’t There.”  Mary Daniel will also be available to discuss her approach to the film and answer questions.  The event will begin at 6:00pm in Neff Hall, room 101 on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and is open to the public free of charge. 

“Pictures of Things That Aren’t There” is an anthology of six works loosely tied together by the circumstance of their making: all were initiated while Daniel was caring for her mother as she lived out her life with Alzheimer’s disease. Aesthetic and formal strategies vary according the needs of each piece, on the whole favoring frugality of means and emphasizing the art of making do. Each a stand-alone work in its own right, together they form a constellation of poignant meditations on the relationship between the creative imagination and our sense of self, of longing, and of loss.

A quote from the 2003 Images Festival emphasizes Daniel’s skill in capturing the essence of a personal experience, “Daniel explores loss as something sensed, felt and lived within this poetic portrait of the absences we feel in the moments we capture on film.”

Mary J. Daniel is a media artist and educator, with an MFA in film & video, and several years experience teaching film and video production to artists, including at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design and the University of British Columbia—Okanagan. Originally schooled through Simon Fraser University, she was based in Vancouver for over decade, making experimental films, working as a writer for documentaries, and lending her lighting and editing skills to other local independents. She has a twenty-year history of making works that focus on the artistry and poetry of mundane phenomena. These include several short films and videos and a feature-length study of everyday storytelling. She is the producer of an omnibus of six films by six women on the six senses, the writer of several broadcast documentaries, and has over two-dozen production credits on independent films and videos.
